California Driving license – Written Test

When you arrive in the United States, one of the first challenging missions is obtaining a driver’s license. To sum it up, the process involves taking the written test (either online or at the DMV) and visiting the DMV to get the provisional license.

Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Apply for a DMV Driver’s License

Ensure you have the necessary documents ready. You’ll need to take the written test to obtain a provisional license.

Schedule the DMV Written Test

The written test can be taken online, but it’s available only from 8 AM to 4 PM, Monday to Friday. If you plan to take it at the DMV, make sure to arrive before 4 PM, as the DMV typically closes by 4:40 PM.

Take the DMV Written Test (Online):

The written test can be scheduled online with a fee of around $41. Follow the link sent to your email to take the test. During the test, make sure not to move or speak, as advised in the ‘How It Works’ section. If you have a U.S. phone number, attempting the test from Korea before arriving might be a good idea.

Submit Documents after Passing the Written Test:

Whether you submitted documents online or not, you’ll need to present the actual documents at the DMV. Documents include your passport, visa, I-94, and proof of address (utility bill, lease agreement, bank statement). After submitting the documents, you’ll undergo a vision test, have your photo taken, and receive a temporary driver’s license. This allows you to practice driving with a licensed California driver and enables you to obtain car insurance. You can proceed to get car insurance while preparing for the practical driving test. Please note that only original official documents in letter format are accepted. Screenshots or simple screen prints are not valid. If you’re struggling to find a place to print your I-94, consider visiting a local library, school, or a place that sells used cars.

Now, you’ve completed this mission in about three hours, including waiting time. Good luck with your driving journey in California!
